In sports consistency is the true test of champions.  Those that can defy the injuries, back ups, and father time to string together consecutive starts over years is a remarkable feat.  Here is the most impressive consecutive games played by sports.

NFL

Brett Favre played in 297 straight games in 20 seasons without missing a game.  What makes this record most impressive is that Favre was sacked a record number 525 times.

NBA

AC Green at 1,192 between 1986-2001 for 16 seasons

MLB

Cal Ripken Jr 2632 starts.  Whats even more impressive he did it all with Baltimore.

NHL

Center Doug Jarvis  was able to last 943 games straight.  And mind you this was back in an NHL that showcased goons and bench clearing brawls.

I Scream, you scream, we all scream for our favorite team!

Cheering! The proper way to Scream!!

By Stats

How many games have you went to and cheered so loud that by the last few minutes of the game you were out of voice?  How many times have your team been down by a few points with minutes remaining and you have no voice left to inspire them?  Personally I’ve never come home from a game with my voice being as strong as before the game.

The problem is that the majority of fans don’t know how to use their voice. I remember the first Denver Broncos game I went to live.  My wife (girlfriend at the time) got a hold of a pair of tickets and invited me to go.  She is a singer and has a tremendously strong voice.  It was so strong in fact that when the crowd was at its loudest her voice still shined through.  I mean I was screaming at the top of my lungs and couldn’t hear my own voice.  But through the wall of sound her voice shined through.

Why? Well it’s not just that her voice is strong but later the next day when my voice returned I asked her what was her secret.  ”I yell from the diaphragm and not my throat!”  She responded. So today’s post is about the correct way to yell and save our voice.  As a fan the most powerful tool we have is our voice.  So protecting it is of the utmost importance.  And this can be done by learning to cheer using your diaphragm instead of screaming from your throat.

Since I’m not an expert on the topic I found this article that explains how to scream in properly in 6 steps.  http://www.wikihow.com/Scream-Sing-without-Damaging-Your-Voice

Practice this for a couple of weeks and you will soon be the loudest fan from the beginning until the final buzzer.

Fan Code the Olympics Edition

With the Olympics opening today its important that we understand and review the rules of rooting for your nation and favorite athlete.  If you are rooting for the host nation then the original 8 fan commandments are in full effect.  The following 8 Fan commandments have slight changes for fans that are visitors during the Olympics.

1. Do Root for your team/nation by all means necessary!  This means 100% from the opening ceremony to the final awarded medal.   This also includes watching sports that you don’t necessarily watch.

2. Do watch your mouth!  Don’t stop routing but watch your mouth.
If you don’t understand the local culture your mouth could write a check your ass cannot cover!  Just be careful with what you say, especially when bad mouthing the other team.  Leave race and cultural comments out of your rants.

3. Do represent your nation!  Where your nations colors with pride and understand that you are an ambassador to your country.  Other people’s will judge your nation on how its members behave. Let them know that your country is proud of its athletes but also good sports who can have a good time.

4. Do learn the basics!  Understand the basic customs of the host country.  Especially around sports.  Are their rules to cheering?  How serious do the fans get? etc…

5. Do bring souvenirs!  Bring small pins or something that is representative of your country.  You can use them to trade with people from other countries.  This is not only a cool hobby but breaks down barriers between different cultures.

6. Don’t hate on all other nations! You can route for your team and still respect the other athletes!  This is hard, but have respect for all the players whether you like them or not.  With out them we have no sport.  Not to mention that all of these athletes have worked hard to get to this point in their career and that deserves respect no matter where they are from.

7. Do know the sports major players!  Sports knowledge is always key and in the Olympics many athletes are national heroes that have a cult following.  Understanding the sport your following will increase your enjoyment and the ability for you to route intelligently!

8. Do enjoy! The Olympics is a great way to discover new experiences and people’s.  If your fortunate enough to visit a host country take advantage of the experience and the local surroundings.
